February, a time of increased social interactions and dominance
简介：February is the natural breeding season of wolves, and even though our exhibit pack is spayed and neutered, there is still an increase of androgens from the adrenal gland. No doubt this is weaker than the than reproductively intact animals, but the influence is still noticeable. There is far more physical contact during this month, wolves rubbing up against one another, parallel gaiting, chin rubbing, rolling over for one another etc. It is an interesting time to film the wolves as action can change quickly. A social greeting can quickly turn to a ritualized display of dominance. In a recent enclosure enrichment project, a bison hide was provided to the pack to provide a distraction for a change in their routine. This was a great stimulus to behaviors and provided some good video interactions.
简介：Dominance interactions occur daily. You can learn more about the ambassador wolves by visiting http://www.wolf.org and reading their wolf logs.
A feeding without a Public Viewing
简介：The wolves are fed a large meal on Saturday night for a public program entitled “What's for Dinner”, then a mid-week feeding on Wednesday morning before we open to the public. Shadow is timid around people and usually backs off of the carcass until after the program is over and people have left the building. On Tuesday night, a deer torso was fed without anyone but the Curator and the roof contractors on site, no-one at the window. Without people, Shadow was very active on the feeding, this video shows a view of the pack that is only observed by wolf care staff.
